Chiropractic Works Pittsfield is happy to announce to the Pittsfield community our efforts to help local residents who are suffering from pain due to herniated discs, or sciatica, whether from natural causes or from an auto accident. This Pittsfield chiropractor prides himself in offering all-natural low force techniques for eliminating both herniated disc and sciatic pain.

One of the most common distinctions of being a human beings is that they have vertebra. The vertebra are often referred to as the backbones or spinal column. The spine is the term used in reference to the column of bones that run down the center of one's back. Each bone in the spine is called a vertebrae. In most cases, every individual has 24 of them, except in a few cases where they are either fused at birth, or due to a trauma.

Located right in the center each of the vertebrae is the spinal disc. The disc is actually a gelatinous pad that serves as the shock absorber, and spacer, for each of the vertebrae in the spine. Despite its naturally helpful nature, discs actually have become a cause of intense discomfort for many people. The pain and discomfort that come with every back and neck pain attack can be blamed on these naturally harmless and beneficial discs.

When a physical trauma takes place, such as in a car accident injury, the disc gets squeezed. As a result, the cartilage is pushed out. More serious cases even come about when the nucleus, the center, of the disc is injured and it will actually ooze out of the confines of the vertebra. This is commonly termed a disc herniation.

The thing about herniated disc is how it can exert pressure on the nerves in the spine. This is why one feels the pain in the back or neck area. The pain usually comes hand in hand with other feelings such as a tingling sensation, numbness and a possible feeling of weakness in the hips, legs, shoulders, and arms.
