Pixar's History
Pixar Animation Studios is an American CGI animation film based in Emeryville
, California, United States. Pixars objective is to combine proprietary technology and world-class creative talent to develop computer-animated feature films with a new 3D appearance, memorable characters and heartwarming stories that appeal to audience of all ages. Recently it has just released Toy Story 3 and received very good reception.
According to Pixars page at Wikipedia, compiled at Tinkrbox, a video/website bookmarking site, Pixar began in 1979, and was initially a high-end computer hardware company whose core product was the Pixar Image Computer, a system primarily sold to government agencies and the medical community. The Image Computer never sold well. In a bid to drive sales Pixar employee John Lasseter, who had long been creating short demonstration animations, such as Luxo Jr., to show off the devices capabilities. As poor sales of Pixars computers threatened to put the company out of business, Lasseters animation department began producing computer-animated commercials for outside companies including Tropicana, Listerine and LifeSavers. During this period, Pixar continued its relationship with Walt Disney. It was acquired by Apple co-founder Steve Jobs in 1986, and later bought by Walt Disney Company in 2006.
At Pixars Company Info page, compiled at Tinkrbox, Pixars first ever short, Luxo Jr was premiered at Siggraph in 1986, receiving an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Short Film. Since then, Pixar has been consistently producing shorts and films. In 1995, Toy Story was produced, receiving critical and commercial success. As of 2010, Pixar has released 11 CGI films and over 30 shorts.
Despite a slow, financially difficult beginning, Pixar Animation Studios had landed on the fast track and was known throughout the world. With its technological breakthroughs and brilliantly crafted animated films, the sky was the limit in the coming decade and beyond. As stated in its 1996 annual report, Pixar succeeded because it was well aware of the pitfalls of filmmaking: 'Though Pixar is the pioneer of computer animation, the essence of our business is to create compelling stories and memorable characters. It is chiseled in stone at our studios that no amount of technology can turn a bad story into a good one.'
