Places Of Interest In Spain - Ceuta & Melilla

Ceuta and Melilla, the twin cities bordering North Africa and on the strait of Gibraltar are actually located in the North of Spain

. These strategically located twin cities are also being used by the Spanish Army for military purposes. The hill called the Monte Hacho has become an observatory for the Spanish Military. Interestingly these twin cities have history dating back to 5th century BC when they were under the occupation of Carthaginians. Thereafter, it was Romans, Vandals followed by Visigoths, Byzantines and Moors. These two cities put together measure about 22 sq kms. These small twin cities have places which are of interest for tourists.

Melilla:

Melilla has many things to offer the tourist. Similar to Barcelona, Melilla has many buildings built centuries ago. These buildings are glaring examples of excellent architectural work. The entire city was securely fortified as long back as the 16th century. Many parts of the wall were demolished in the later period and several monumental buildings were constructed. Some of the other places of interest in Melilla are the Municipal museum which has a collection of some of the rarest works of art.

The Purest conception church is another important place of visit. This church is believed to have been constructed in the year 1687 and it has a beautiful image of Our Lady of Victory. The famous Rain tank constructed in 1571 certainly should never be missed. The hospital of the King, Army museum, Conventico cave and the Governor"s house are some of the other places of interest in Melilla.

Ceuta:

This small town has a Cathedral called the Asuncion of the Virgin constructed on a mosque in the year 711. The beautiful image of Vergin flagship of Portugal adores this cathedral. The museum of the real walls, the municipal palace, San Francisco church, Marine park, immaculately beautiful beach, the archeological museum which has Arab bath, house of dragon are some of the other places of interest. Ceuta also has a monument of Lieutenant Ruiz and a statue of old garden of San Sebastian.

The other monuments include that of Colonel Gonzalez and monument of Hercules which are masterpiece works of sculpture. San Antanio hermitage, Merinidas wall, beautiful mountain range, Muley mosque and innumerable historical buildings are enough to keep the tourist busy and make his tour the most memorable. Apart from this there are also many other monuments and beaches nearby which should never be missed.
