Overview

The town Nerja is located at a distance of 50 KM from the city of Mlaga and is on the seashore; it is at the eastern tip of the Sun Coast'. The current population of this town is about 22000.

This town is a tourist oriented town in the Malaga province which is a part of the autonomous region of Andalusia. You can reach this town by road within an hour and a quarter from Alhambra which is situated in the Granada city.

This town is bordered by Sierra Almijara mountain range. This is not affected by high rise structures that have been the problem in tourist resorts along the coast. The town's old quarter remains unchanged; the roads are narrow and the streets are winding streets. There are whitewashed houses.

History

The history of Nerja has been quite long and this can easily be seen by the historic paintings available in the Nerja caves that have been discovered in the year 1959. It is believed that these caves connect the mountains between Nerja and Granada which is very far and this is considered as the system that has not been explored in Europe. Tourists visiting these caves can see the remains of Nerja's ancient inhabitants.

Originally the Romans named the settlement Detunda; it was called Narixa by Arabs which means abundant spring and the present name originated from this.

The average temperatures in a year are as follows:

Maximum 25 C in the months of July-August

Minimum 13 C in January-February

Art and Culture

The "Balcony of Europe" is a popular promenade situated along the edge of a towering cliff and this site was a Moorish castle once upon a time. You can have a panoramic view of the beaches, coves, Mediterranean and Blue Mountains.

El Salvador Church is a 17th century monument in the town and its architecture style is a mixture of Moorish and Baroque.

The caves in Nerja are attractive and highly fascinating and these are situated at a distance of 3 KM from the heart of the town. These caves contain paintings that are more than 20000 years old and also prehistoric ruins. One of the largest natural caves has been converted into a concert hall and during summer a large number of performances are given in this place.

Cuisine

Nerja gastronomy is popular for red mullet, fried fish and other items like sausage, eggs, chips, etc.

Sports and Entertainment

The length of beach in this town is 16 KM and it has clear water and powdery sand. You can enjoy the water sports water skiing, sailing, scuba diving, etc.
