Plain Packaging Does It Work, And How People Try To Get Around It

You may not know this but in Australia all cigarettes must now be in an unbranded

pack and carry rather nasty looking pictures of the physical effects of cigarettes. They are no longer pretty and cool looking.

This has been a very contentious policy with many differing and opposing views on whether it is a good thing and whether it works or not.

Some people say it may even be harmful or have a negative effect.

So what did I find today?

Someone has begun marketing a coloured cover for cigarette packets so they will look pretty again!

They have started a Facebook page and so far have about 1800 likes.

Whilst you have to admire their marketing nous, I was quite taken aback at this development.

I was also interested to see that the age group this is most popular with is the 18-34 years age group.

Apparently people of this age still tend to think they are bullet proof, immune to the negative effects of cigarettes, and they obviously disagree with the messages on the cigarette packs, or at least do not want to see it.

Denial and rebellion are paramount. So their solution is to just cover it up. Out of sight out of mind!

It is no wonder cigarette companies are marketing hard to the younger age group, and as I always tell my prospective clients no-one can MAKE you stop smoking and this plain packaging initiative probably wont make you either; whether it discourages younger people from taking up smoking remains to be seen.

What is also interesting is the age group of my smoking cessation clients.

The most common age group of my clients is 35 65 years old.

By this age they have started to realize that smoking is killing them.

Their bodies have started to show the effects of smoking and the first signs of illness.

They often have children and do not wish to set a bad example or expose them to second hand cigarette smoke.

They do not want to die young, or at least younger than they otherwise would if they were nonsmokers.

In reality it doesnt matter how pretty you make the package, cigarettes still kill you.

I am not a rich person, and I do not wish to set myself up as morally superior, but I just cannot understand how people can continue to make millions from this filthy deadly disgusting product.

I cannot reconcile the conflict of interest that our government has; making millions in taxes on the one hand, and spending (fewer I imagine) millions on quit smoking programs and countless millions on health care for people made ill from smoking.

It makes no sense. However I cannot control the works. All Ii can do is continue to offer my stop smoking hypnosis Brisbane service to help those who want smoking cessation services.
