If you are going to be travelling alone, you will need to think about taking rest stops to keep yourself alert during the drive. If your journey is especially long you might even want to book yourself into a roadside hotel along the way just to be certain that you dont overtire yourself. Falling asleep at the wheel may seem like something that would never happen to you, but many drivers experience it and sometimes with disastrous effects.

Another thing to consider is the possibility of your car breaking down. This is why you should always take an emergency breakdown kit with you on all journeys, not just long ones, so that you can be prepared for a flat tire or an overheated engine. It is also advisable that you take out breakdown cover, either from a third party company or through your insurance provider.

Make sure you take some entertainment with you for your long journey, as the last thing you want is to spend an entire day driving and being bored out of your mind. The radio might not be good enough in situations such as these, so take some of your favourite CDs with you, or maybe an audio book.

Those that are taking children on their journey will need to keep them entertained as well, which can be easily done by taking a few of their favourite games along with them. You can get traditional board games in handy travel packs that can be played in the car, ensuring that your kids arent bored and dont throw any tantrums along the way.

Food is also something to consider during your drive. You could take a packed lunch with you and pull into a rest stop to eat it or go into one of the many fast food restaurants you can find at them for a bite to eat.
