Planning Approval Granted For Gary Neville's Teletubby Home

It seems as though the controversial plans for Gary Neville's house have been in the spotlight for a very long time. There was outrage when he submitted plans to Bolton council for a eco-friendly home which critics claimed looked like a house off the children's programme Teletubbies. The main reason behind the uproar was that the house was to be built on greenbelt land. However earlier this month he was backed by the councillors of Bolton council.

Both he and his wife were present at Bolton town hall and they watched their 8million development get approved by a majority vote. It was this same committee that turned down the plans last year, they felt that the proposed wind turbine was too high and the fact that it would be on protected moorland. Neville went away and changed his plans, he lowered the height of the wind turbine to 100ft and then simply resubmitted the plans, this time they were given the green light.

The four bedroom mansion looks like something from the future as it is built into the ground, it will be located on the moorland in Harwood near Bolton's border with Bury. The shape of the house will look like a flower with the vast majority of it being underground. As a result the roofs of the house will be covered in moorland.

It has taken three years to get the design of the house approved by the planners but now Neville has to go to the Secretary of State because the house is on protected land. Campaigners against the plans even shouted at the committee members who voted in favour of the development. One critic shouted "you should be ashamed of yourselves". Nearby residents are also against the plans going ahead as they feel that it would decimate the land, cause noise pollution and also road safety dangers.

Neville has been accommodating to his potential future neighbours. He invited them to personally view the plans at a series of meetings and councillors felt that Neville had displayed, through the design, the special circumstances necessary to approve applications on greenbelt land. His planning agent Mike Ralph insisted that because of the outstanding modern design there is nothing remotely similar in the region. Special circumstances are needed to build on greenbelt land which he believes this house has, he feels that the merits of the house outweigh the harm in it.

However the chairman of the Affetside Society accused Neville of exaggerating the green credentials of the house and that greenbelt land is protected for a reason. She also mentioned that 41 serious traffic incidents had taken place on the surrounding roads around the site. Although the councillors were split on whether to grant permission or not the vote still went through. The local Liberal Democrat councillor felt that there was no need to dig up such a large space of moorland simply to house a four bedroom family home. The Labour councillor was more in favour insisting that innovations needed to be tested.

There have been 108 objections to the house received by the council with only 3 supporting the build.
