Planning For Retirement

Fifty nine and a half

Fifty nine and a half. That is the age that the International Revenue Service (IRS) has determined as the retirement age for Americans. With that being the case, people have a lot of time when they do not need to work anymore. The problem comes when these people do not need to work and yet they need money to support themselves. This can get tricky as a couple might have between twenty and thirty years of life left after retirement. What are they supposed to do to support themselves financially during that time?

While there are many investment options out there to provide for people in their old age, one option is an Individual Retirement Account (IRA). This type of investment allows people to put tax-deductible money in an account that gains interest as the years go by. Once the person reaches retirement age, he is able to withdraw the money in it and use it to live on.

These investments can make money in different ways. Many people put their money in CDs (Certificates of Deposit). A CD provides a higher rate of interest if a person agrees to leave the money in it for a specific period of time. While this type of investment does gain interest, if people are interested in making more money with their IRAs, they can also choose to put the money into investing in higher risk, higher return stocks and mutual funds. This is more risky, but it also could provide more money in the long run.

There are many benefits of an IRA, but the biggest one is that it provides money for a person when he or she decides to retire. This can be very important in a time when many people are not planning for their future. Because the money put in is usually tax-deductible, the investment does not cost much and can be a big benefit later on. It can also provide a person and his family with the peace of mind that everything will be taken care of at retirement.

While there are many benefits to IRA investments, there are a couple of disadvantages. Because this is an investment, usually people cannot use the money until they reach retirement age without incurring a fee. This can be difficult if a crisis or something else occurs that makes a person need to have access to his money. Also, once a person starts getting his or her money back at retirement, there can be some complications with taxes depending on how much money he now suddenly earns.

Individual Retirement Accounts are an important type of investment to consider as a person decides what to do about his future. While there are many advantages to IRA investments, there are some disadvantages as well. Planning for retirement can be a bit tricky, but having a plan can also bring its own share of rewards in the long run.
