Planning On Becoming An Interior Designer?

Choosing a career as an interior designer means that you will have a well paid job that is fun, gives you freedom, and allows you to meet all kinds of people. As you may already know, an interior designer is a person that decorates/furnishes the interior of a room. In the following paragraphs you will take a sneak peek at what you will learn in school if you choose to pursue this career path.

As a designer you will have the opportunity to decorate and/or furnish advertising agencies, art galleries, bed and breakfast, boutique stores, corporate head office, hotels, law firm, models homes for builders, museum stores, restaurants, spas, and even yachts'. However being an interior designer means more than simply knowing where to place a picture frame or what curtains to chose. As an interior designer you will need to learn how to properly communicate with engineers, architects, clients and read a blueprint. Therefore you need to attend a FIDER (Foundation for Interior Designer Education Research) approved college and obtain a bachelors degree on interior designer.

Once in school you also need to take computer-aided design (CAD) courses. You will also learn important things you need to know about interior designing elements like space planning, colors, lights, decorating styles, furniture, floorings, walls and windows. In school you will also learn how to design presentation boards, how to network like a professional designer, what resources you have available, how to obtain media publicity, and how to prepare different samples to present to your clients.


Now that you know what to expect once you enter a school of interior designing, it is also important to learn three extra things. First, check if your school offer internship programs, if they do then join one. Internship programs allow you to meet people and get contacts. (By getting contacts you may get a job faster and easier ones you finished school) Second, you need to know that to obtain your interior designer license you need to spend two years on field work before taking the NICDQ (National Council for Interior Designer Qualification) qualification exam. (This is a prerequisite)

Finally, you need to know that every state has different rules and regulations that you need to fallow as an interior designer. Hence, you need to contact your state's regulatory agency and get informed on all the licensing requirements you need to work as an interior designer. (Or you can also visit the NICDQ website where you can find a sate-by-state licensing requirements.)
