As an attendee, make sure you know what you want to achieve by attending the event, no matter if you are going on your own or are being sent by your boss. If you are going with other people in your company, decide how to best maximize the time spent there. Split up so you can cover more ground at large shows. Come up with a plan of which trade show exhibits are must-sees and which you would simply like to see. Decide on the information needed to be gained from each exhibitor. Come up with specific questions to ask each one. Make sure to bring plenty of business cards to give out in lieu of filling out numerous forms.

Remember to be as comfortable as possible. It can be very tiring to spend the day seeing lots of trade show booths. Above all, wear comfortable walking shoes. Consider bringing a light jacket. While lots of people might warm up a convention hall, indoor arenas can often be overly air-conditioned. Also, confirm the location of the venue and make sure you know how to navigate through the city to get there.

During The Show

Once you arrive, check any coats or bags so you don't have to lug them around all day. Again, you want to be as comfortable as possible. Find out where the nearest bathroom and water fountain are for convenience sake. Consult the directory and schedule, and plan out a route that makes the most sense and allows you to visit as many trade show exhibits as possible. Bring something to take notes with, and consider bringing a digital camera to take pictures of newly introduced products.

Don't be afraid to introduce yourself to exhibitors. Consider trade events a networking event and take advantage of workshops. Hand out business cards when appropriate. Remember to take regular breaks every few hours to drink water and rest. If one of your must-see booths seems to be constantly crowded, come back at the end of the day when the crowds will have likely thinned.

After The Event

Compile the notes you took and add to them. Consolidate this information about your experience, vendors you are seriously considering, and other important information into an organized trip report for your boss, if necessary. Decide how you will follow up with exhibitors at specific trade show booths if you need to request samples or brochures.
