festivals of India and includes five days of festivities that are observed in various states. It usually falls in November, between Ashwin and Kartik months according to Hindu calendar. To stop him, Lord Vishnu appeared on earth as a short Brahmin and asked for as much land as his three footsteps would cover. Tradition made it imperative for Bali to grant his wish and the Brahmin resumed his powerful and omnipresent form to cover heavens with one foot and world below with another. Then he asked for a space to place his third step, to which, Bali offered his own head for him to rest his foot on. This victory of Lord Vishnu is celebrated as Deepawali, which is another name for Diwali. First day is known as Asweyuja Bahula Thrayodasi when people pray to Lord Kubera for bringing wealth and prosperity into their homes. Second day is marked with the worshipping of Lord Yama, when four wicks are lighted and effigy of Narakasura is burnt. Third day of Diwali festival in Mysore is observed as Kaumudi Mahotsavam. On this day, black gram leaves are eaten and lamps are lit in several places. Fourth day witnesses celebration of Bali Pratipada, which is done in remembrance of the mighty emperor. Fifth day is observed as Bhatru Dwithiya or Yama Dwitheya, which celebrates the unique relationship of a brother and sister. On this day, sisters offer delicious treats to their brothers. Sisters also worship berry trees on this occasion and pray for the well-being of their brothers.
