Planning an Asian-Fusion Theme Wedding by:Georgina Clatworthy

Asian themed weddings have proved popular for many couples in recent years

. Perhaps the mixture of romantic elements such as cherry blossom & orchids, combined with a zen like feel & sophisticated, minimal design is the perfect recipe for a wedding.

Anyone can have an Asian themed wedding ; it does not have to be your cultural roots or that of your intended. For most couples, it is simply a love of the style that makes them want to take on an Eastern style wedding day.

So what is Asian-Fusion? Basically it is a combination of Chinese & Japanese elements, although it can draw on many different inspirations. Here are some popular elements to add to your theme.

Pre-Wedding Pleasures

Start your theme off from the moment you get engaged. Have some photo's taken under spring time cherry blossom trees & consultant with Far East oracles to discover the most auspicious dates on which to marry. When it comes to your stationery, use traditional Japanese & parchment style papers to create stunning custom invitations. Research symbols & motifs or use the double happiness symbol throughout your wedding theme .

Decor with Far-East Flair

Within both cultures, Chinese & Japanese, the wedding nuptials are very different. But within an Asian-Fusion wedding you can take the best bits from both.

Add these elements into your wedding dcor:

. Colorful paper parasols

. Shoji style paper lanterns

. Lucky bamboo plants

. Sprays of beautiful orchids or scattered orchid flowers.

Hanging lanterns provide beautiful splashes of color & atmospheric light when the evening draws in. Silk or paper fans will keep your guests cool in the hot sun & paper parasols will provide some shade.

Create a zen like table with loose river stones acting as place cards & little lucky bamboo plants standing on bamboo runners for your table centers. Go further & have your guests seated on wooden benches or stools & eat their meal with chopsticks.

For your cake, choose a design incorporating cherry blossoms, lotus flowers, orchids, dragonflies or koi fish. Top it with a metal double happiness symbol.

Other beloved accents can include:

Origami cranes. Beautiful paper cranes were traditionally folded by the bride & groom before the wedding, when they would create a thousand of these. They are said to bring good luck to the marriage. You can string them together & use as garlands, give away as favors or use them to prop up your place cards.

Water features. Water plays an important part in any zen like setting. The sight & sound of moving water brings a sense of calm & tranquility. Use some battery operated fountains as table centers & float orchid heads in them.

River stones. Create simple & eye-catching centerpieces with low square glass containers filled with black & white river stones & a single white pillar candle. Or float orchid heads, spider mums or aisan lilies in shallow bowls of water with floating candles.

Paper parasols. Line your ceremony aisle with large open parasols & heaps of rose petals. At the reception hang them from the ceiling & light from above with a low-heat light source.
