Planning the installation of a petro-chemical pipe network
Any installation of pipe networks used for the transfer of petro-chemicals requires careful planning. One of the most important considerations for petro-chemical pipe networks is the choice of construction material. Various metals can be used for this purpose but some networks will need to be far more resilient than others, depending on both the substances being carried and the external environment in which the pipe network is located.
Galvanised steel, in which the steel is coated by a protective chemical, will rarely be considered for pipe networks since the protective coating can easily wear away. Steel alloys on the other hand, whereby steel is combined with strengthening and corrosion-resistant elements such as nickel and molybdenum, are ideal for petro-chemical pipe networks. These alloys range from austenite stainless steel through to duplex and super duplex steel, the latter two alloys offering the most robust protection at a cost-effective rate.
The second important consideration for pipe networks is what size pipe fittings to use and what size flanges will be needed to connect these fittings.
Pipe fittings and pipe flanges are supplied in various diameter sizes and are identified as such through the use of one of three industry standard designations: the British BS standard; the European PN / DIN standard; and the US ASA / ANSI standard. Although some pipe fittings and flanges share both BS and ANSI compatibility, it is generally not advisable to try and connect pipe fittings and flanges supplied to differing standards.
Finally, all pipe network constructions need to be planned to permit the most efficient transfer of gas or liquid. This will often involve utilising various shaped pipe fittings and taking into account the flow pressures at different points.
