Formal hedges are more structured and usually shaped well. Gardeners have to prune and take care of these plants on a regular basis. Informal hedges are more undefined and left to grow of their own. They grow naturally without regular pruning.

After deciding the structuring, you need to think seriously about single row planting or double raw planting. Single row planting is mainly suitable for locations with a limited budget and mainly preferred for a shallow area. As its name suggests, double row planting consists of two rows of hedges, which is recommended for shrubs for getting maximum screening.

Expert gardeners prepare their gardens much before the actual planting season. They make sure to remove all weeds from the area so that the root systems get an easy access of water and nutrients. It is recommended to dig trench wide enough for your plants for maintaining proper spacing between the defined rows. However, it is important to know that the spacing should be decided on the type of plants you have chosen for your garden. Do not forget to check the content of soil as well.
