Planting and Growing Grapes Effectively

Just imagine relaxing with friend sipping a lovely wine what a luxurious thought. How good will that feeling be if you have made the wine yourself. To be a successful grape grower is not as difficult as it first seems and is the first step to completing the dream.

It's your choice, dependant on space, what the size of your vineyard shoul be. If you are just getting started it is a good idea to plant only a few vines. Ten is a good number at first. Usually wine is made at home in five gallons batches to provide sufficient grapes to achieve this will take about ten vines. Bare-rooted dormant grapes are available from nurseries and it is probably best to start with these. The nurseries will usually have grown these vines in their fields. Early spring is a good time to buy and plant your vines as the climate is ideal. Your vines need time to settle before the main growing season begins and the spring rain will help the vines bed in. Keep your vines moist by spraying them with water until you are ready to plant them.

You will find vines very easy and straightforward to plant. Dig a hole that is large enough for the whole root system. Any buds that on the vine should not be covered with soil. Carefully support the vine while you gently tamp down the soil. All air pockets should be removed from the soil. By leaving a slight depression at the base of the vine will aid watering. You will not have to water in the vines after planting if the soil is dampish.

Just make sure the soil is kept damp after the vine shows signs of life. If you are lucky a good shower of rain will mean that you do not need to water that day. Additional watering is required if the rain is only slight. Extra watering will be required if the soil is light and sandy. As the water will be retained longer by clay based soils you will need to water less often. Whatever the soil good drainage is a must. If the you have good free drainage there is less need to be worried about over watering.

To be a winner at growing grapes you will need to maximise the sunlight and air flow that the vine gets. Plant you vines in areas that are unaffected by shade and restricted airflow ie in the lea of trees or other structures. In order for plants to undergo photosynthesis, they need sunlight. Carbon dioxide is converted into sugar by photosynthesis. Sugar in the grapes will ferment into alcohol. As a result of poor air circulation and too little sunshine, grapes can suffer from fungus disease problems.

You can succeed and grow great grapes. Be prepared to give your vineyard year-round attention. Put in the time and effort over the three years it takes for your first crop and the grapes will be sweet and the wine memorable.
