Plastic Secondary Glazing

Though it may still be August, the weather is turning decidedly autumnal this week

, which means that the cold weather will soon be upon us. I don"t know about you, but my mind is turning to DIY projects I can do around the home to prepare for the cooler weather, and as always insulation is a priority. Although I have double glazing some of the window seals are a little old now and they don"t close like they used to, which makes some of the rooms in my house a little draughty from time to time.

I read an article about acrylic greenhouse panels recently, and it gave me the idea of installing some plastic secondary glazing over my draughty windows this autumn. I"d had the idea before, but glass panels can be a little expensive and I hadn"t realised plastic was such a good alternative. It is half the weight of glass, but far stronger and more resilient to impact which makes it perfect for use in the home. Additionally, it appears you only need a little soap and water to keep the plastic panels clean so they are very low maintenance too.

There are a few different types of acrylic sheet available, but it is extruded acrylic which seems most appropriate for use as secondary glazing. Extruded acrylic is made by extruding the acrylic resin on a production line, which results in the uniform thickness that makes it so suitable for use in glazing applications. Though it may not be as strong as other types of acrylic or Perspex sheeting, it is still far stronger than plate glass and perfectly safe for use where the safety of pets and children might be a factor.

Once it is installed my plastic secondary glazing will not only provide draught exclusion and insulation for the winter; it will greatly reduce street noise and delay the need for me to replace my double glazing! My clear acrylic sheets have been ordered cut to size, and once I have installed them I will have to write another article to compare plastic secondary glazing to traditional glass, though I have a feeling I already know which one will come out on top!
