Plastic Surgeon: A Career In Medicine, An Artistic Calling
When embarking on a career in the medical field it can be hard to decide what to specialize in
. There are many benefits to becoming an oncologist and working to diagnose and treat cancer, while simultaneously striving to make it obsolete. There is something to be said about being a cardiothoracic doctor and holding a person's heart in your hands as you operate to give them a better and longer life. Also, pediatricians are entrusted with the care and health of the next generation of people and their success ensures that our children are living their lives healthily. One field to consider that has not come up is that of a plastic surgeon. This career fuses art and science in a way that provides beauty and function to the people that they serve.
A career in the medical field offers a person the opportunity to offer the world much needed care, while also securing a comfortable wage for oneself. Being a plastic surgeon allows those with a passion for art the ability to combine their love and appreciation of the human form with the science and skill necessary to reshape and recreate that image. Those who choose to pursue cosmetic surgery as a specialty are not only going to be providing people with ways of making their faces and bodies more beautiful, they are going to be helping those who have been burned or disfigured regain their lives. They are going to assist children born with birth defects to look and feel normal.
When most think of the work a plastic surgeon does they consider breast augmentation, liposuction, and face lifts. The truth of the matter is that this field of healthcare developed as a way to address damage and deformity. In fact the first recorded cases of modern cosmetic surgery took place during World War I to treat the damage done by explosions and fire. That is where the beginning and most common use of this type of doctor occurred. Skin grafting for injuries or burns is a huge part of the work that these doctors do. The trick is to graft the skin in a way that scarring is minimized and the body looks as natural as possible.
The other major work that a plastic surgeon does is reconstructive. That is to help people who have been injured in traumatic injuries, like bone fractures, and burns; assisting in reconstructing body parts that have been taken by cancer, infection, or tumors; and addressing congenital defects like cleft palates, cleft lips, and polydactyly. In all of these situations it is necessary to have the same level of anatomic knowledge as a painter or sculptor. It requires the touch of an artist to create a new nose or reform a breast that looks natural and organic.
