Plastic Surgeons: The All Important Initial Consultation
Plastic surgeons will usually schedule an initial consultation for any patients thinking about getting cosmetic enhancement
. This meeting, usually somewhat informal in nature, is the perfect time for the patient to get to know the doctor and vice versa. It provides an opportunity for the patient to ask all the questions they have about the subject and decide whether or not this path is for them. Unfortunately, many patients go into this meeting with no real idea of what they should be looking for or what questions they should be asking. If you want to meet your doctor prepared, here are some things you should look out for.
Know the Fee
Plastic surgeons are busy professionals and it can be difficult to schedule initial consultations for every potential patient who wants more information about every procedure. For this reason, most doctors must charge a fee of some sort for even the consultation. In some cases, doctors and clinics will agree to apply that consultation fee to the cost of the surgery itself. While it may seem unfair to have to pay $100 or more just for something you're considering, this provides doctors with a wall that keeps people who aren't serious about moving forward from wasting their time. In any event, make sure you know what kind of fee you'll be expected to pay before booking your appointment.
Evaluate the Staff
An initial consultation is not just a valuable way for patients to evaluate plastic surgeons and the procedures themselves, but the clinic and practice as a whole. A doctor's staff is a reflection of the doctor. If you walk in the door and see nothing but unprofessionalism and unfriendliness wherever you turn, it might be a good idea to turn around and walk back out. A good staff understands that the impression they make is important to the practice. They will also understand that first time patients are likely very nervous and will do everything they can to make sure they feel comfortable.
Write Questions
You probably have a thousand questions you would like to be answered by your doctor. But plastic surgeons aren't mind readers. Though a lot of common questions come in through the door, many of which they can anticipate, you may have many questions that are uniquely your own. But don't count on your memory to come through. Write down any questions that come to mind and bring your list with you to the consultation. This will ensure that you don't get home and realize you forgot to ask many of your most important queries.
