Keeping their skill and knowledge updated through seminars, continuing education and other ways is a requirement that the medical professionals should uphold and pursue. With continuous knowledge and updated skills, the practitioner can help their charges by making the procedures less risky and fraught with possible complications. It is also the responsibility of the doctor to be actually trained and skilled in cosmetic surgery in order to practice in this field. Some doctors feel that some experience in surgery qualifies them for procedures that are focused on aesthetics. This is not the case and they should be well aware of this. The state of mind of the plastic surgeons should also be right for surgery. It is not advisable to operate on a person if the doctor doing the surgery is distraught or tense. These feelings, along with many others can affect the performance of the individual. It is best to postpone the deed when everything is better and has resolved itself. The attending doctors should also make sure that any major operation is preceded by tests that declare the individual healthy and fully able to undergo it. These tests help to determine what needs to be done to make the individual a good candidate for surgery.

The medical history of the individual should be clear and concise enough that the medical professional is able to draw conclusions from it or at the very least form an opinion regarding the general health of the patient. Two of the major concerns that plastic surgeons have for their prospective patients are the physical and mental state that they are in. Physically, their charges should be healthy, non-smokers who have no underlying conditions or diseases and if they do have, these should be well managed and under control. Diseases such as diabetes can be a cause of concern if this is not managed well. Heart diseases and conditions should also be under control and be well managed by the patient. Mentally, the person should be ready for the changes that will happen during and after the operation. Some people have regrets after the operation or they have issues with the results of the procedure. Plastic surgeons try their best to prepare their patients for the actual operation and the difficulties that could lie in the recovery period.
