The first shape is supposed to heighten the cheekbones and create a more pronounced appearance of the cheeks. Submalar is used to ease the sunken appearance of hollowed cheeks. In this case, the implants are not directly placed on the bones but free standing. The third shape is dependent on the whim of the patient.

Incisions

There are two choices of where to make the necessary incisions for this type of plastic surgery. Incisions can be made inside the mouth, close to the gum line or near the eyes. The mouth incision carries more risk of an infection since the mouth is moist and contains more bacteria.

The positive aspect of this cut is that the scar is not visible compared to the cut that is made near the eyes. The entire procedure generally takes about two hours and the patient is put under general anesthesia for the duration.

Recovery

Recovery for plastic surgery of the cheeks usually takes a little under two weeks. Some swelling, bruising and discomfort should be expected after the cheek augmentation operation. Specific instructions regarding the care and treatment of the incisions should be followed to the letter to reduce the risk of an infection and lessen pain and discomfort.

Doctors recommend some movement to facilitate better blood circulation compared to just lying in bed the whole time but not much strenuous activity as to elevate blood pressure.
