Plastic Surgery For Gynecomastia In Men

People do not often talk about the embarrassment and shame men feel when they have body issues

. There are lots of reasons a man may feel that way about his body. Some reasons may even be in his control, such as diet and exercise. However, some problems are not in his control. A not uncommon problem called gynecomastia, in which male breasts grow abnormally, affects more men, than people realize. This is most common in teen boys and often resolves itself. Plastic surgery may be a good treatment option for cases that do not go away on their own.

Usually, this is not a serious medical problem, but male breasts can sometimes be painful in addition to embarrassing. Some common causes for male breasts are low levels of testosterone as a male grows older, increase in body fat, and an increase in estrogen. Prescription medications for cancer, AIDS, anxiety, depression, and heart problems can also have this adverse effect. Some other drugs like alcohol, marijuana, amphetamines, and heroin can also cause this in men. In some cases it may be suggested that you stop taking the all drugs. Of course if you are on a prescription, you will need your physician's guidance. If you are using a drug that causes gynecomastia, you are not a good candidate for plastic surgery.

In some cases you may just have excess body fat causing the growth. If this is your issue then you would see positive results from proper diet and exercise. Gynecomastia will not respond to diet and exercise. If you are a healthy weight and your breasts have not continued to get larger, you might be a candidate for a surgical procedure. A good candidate would also have firm skin that will hug the contours of your chest after the procedure. In teens it is best to wait until they have had the problem at least two years. In some cases a follow-up surgery may be necessary.

A consultation appointment may be embarrassing, but you must be candid. There will be a need to measure the fatty tissue, take before, and gather a medical history. The doctor may also need to run other tests to see if you are secreting hormones responsible for large breasts in men.

Of course, there are risks to this and all surgical procedures. Your surgeon will go over them, but here are a few: swelling, bruising, bleeding, infection, scarring, anesthesia risk, pain, skin discoloration, and changes in breast or nipple sensation. Sometimes liposuction is done in conjunction with this surgery. The risks of liposuction are similar.

Male breast reduction is often done in the same office as the initial consultation. Sometimes an overnight stay is suggested, but usually this is not the case. You will be given anesthesia, and your surgeon will discuss the options so you can choose what is right for you. When the surgery is over, the results will be immediately noticeable and usually improve over time. Swelling will go down, scarring will fade, and so will the embarrassment.
