It seems that Nintendo have had the Mario series around since the dawn of time. You can almost picture a cave man with a GameBoy saying "Play super Mario game". The series has had an amazing rate of success over the last thirty or so years. It was 1981 when Mario first made his appearance as the Jumpman in Donkey Kong.
Shigeru Miyamoto, Nintendo's original designer of Mario had come up with various names for the star including Mr. Video. The reason that Mario was chosen as his name was because of an argument with a landlord of a warehouse for Nintendo America named Mario Segale. Segale won the argument and had his name immortalized by Nintendo.
There are over 200 games in which Mario has appeared and there's no way I could talk about them all here. What is interesting is that Mario was not always a good guy; he actually started out as a carpenter that mistreated his pet ape. In 1983 he had a make-over and was no longer a carpenter but a Plumber in New York. He and his brother Luigi were introduced in the game Mario Bros.
The Mario Bros. Brand was an instant success spanning the world and conquering all competing games in its path. No other computer or video game has been able to traverse generations as well as genders to such a degree. Fathers who once played Super Mario games during their childhood now play the latest versions of the game with their sons or daughters.
The Mario brand is the Star Trek or Star Wars of the video game world. Classics that were ground breaking in their day and still continue to astonish 30 years after they were created.
What is for sure is that this is no fad or cult and the brothers are as popular as ever. With an ever increasing team of friends and foes the sound of "Super Mario game" will be heard long in to the future.
