Britain, famously, is a country beset by less than clement weather. Which is a typically British way of saying that it rains all the time, and when it isn't raining it's thinking about it. On average, we UK islanders get less sunshine per year than almost anywhere else in the world and still we persist in playing most of our national sports on large, grassy, outdoor areas with no protection from the elements. Why? Basically because our other national trait, apart from having bad weather and pretending we don't, is that we're all more or less mad. What's that song? Mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun? Should have been, mad English (and Irish, and Scottish and Welsh) people play sports in the pouring rain. Thanks to the ministrations of sports field drainage companies, we can at least do it on a good playing surface.
It's further evidence of the peculiarities of the British, that all of our national sports not only involve playing on a field, but using a ball. In almost every case (except rugby, where a good old mud bath is more or less permissible), the playing surface used is required to let the ball travel smoothly and without obstruction. To wit: football; tennis; golf; cricket; hockey; and polo. Also croquet. Now in order for a ball to travel or bounce well, it needs to do so over a firm smooth surface with a little bit of spring to it. Not the waterlogged bog that most amateur pitches turn into around the end of October. Sports field drainage solutions enable all but the most torrentially rained on surfaces to operate at a pretty normal level of springiness and flatness which means we loonies can play our sports all through the winter without a care.
So how does it work? Drainage is laid under natural turf sports pitches, or built into artificial sports turf pitches. All artificial sports pitches are designed specifically to remove the need for heavy duty drainage the actual design of the pitch, and the materials it is made of, ensure that the water it gets hit with runs off naturally or is extremely easy to remove.
Sports field drainage is absolutely essential to the continued revenue of sporting clubs and organisations up and down the country. People don't come to watch matches of anything played in a mud bath and members will not continue to pay to use sporting facilities where the playing surfaces are continually sub standard or even closed due to water logging. The only way to ensure a playable surface, year in year out, no matter what the season and how heavy the annual rainfall, is to have sports field drainage installed and checked and maintained on a regular basis. Come rain or shine, the game will go on!
