Playing Baseball For Fun
Baseball is the all American game that has been played for the last one hundred and fifty years or so
. The first recorded game with rules was played on June 19, 1846 in Hoboken, New Jersey.
It has erupted into a wide spread activity for many people all over the world but it is especially popular in the United States. Some equipment that is used are; ball, bat, glove, helmet, batting glove, cleats, cap, and other protective gear that some people choose to wear in addition to their uniforms.
It is played with nine defensive players on the field. The first position is called the pitcher and this person is involved with every play that ever happens.
He pitches that ball to the batter and stands in the middle of the diamond shaped part of the field. Sometimes he will throw that ball to one of the basemen to try and tag someone out that is stealing bases.
The catcher plays behind home plate and spends most of the game in a squatting position. He receives the ball from the pitcher if the batter does not hit it when it passes him.
He is responsible for sending the pitcher certain signals that designate which pitch to throw to the batter and also for protecting the home plate and not letting the opposing team score. There is a first base man who plays on the right side of the diamond on the infield and is responsible for touching first base and trying to get outs on the runners.
The second base man plays about halfway between first and second base and shares the responsibility of touching second base with the shortstop depending on where the ball goes. The shortstop plays in between second and third base and will sometime step in at second if the ball is hit to the right of the diamond.
Then there is the third baseman that has similar responsibilities on his own plate. He plays on the very left side of the diamond in the infield.
Beyond the diamond, the outfield extends several feet out and there are three players that have to cover the whole field out there. These positions are right field (who plays on the far right side of the field several feet behind second baseman), center field (who plays straight back from second base), and left field (who plays on the far left side of the field several feet behind the shortstop).
The offensive team has a list of batters that they continue to go through until the defensive team is able to get three outs each inning. Typically there are nine innings if there is no tie with each team going up to bat in each inning.
The pitches throws the ball over home plate and the batter tries to hit it out on the field and make it to first without the ball beating him there. If he is able to do this, he is safe and the umpire will make the call.
If he touches first after the ball is there, he is called out and the next batter comes to the plate. You must touch all four bases consecutively without getting tagged out before you can score a run.
If you hit the ball up into the air and someone from the defending team catches it, then you are considered out. After you hit the ball, you are able to run around the bases and can keep running to the next one if you think you make it there safely.
If you are on first and the next batter hits the ball out into the field, you must run to second. You can't let that batter pass you up on the bases.
When you are up to bat, you are allowed three strikes (where the ball passes through the strike zone) and four balls until you are either considered out because you used all three strikes or until the pitcher throws you four balls that were not in the strike zone and you can walk to first.
