Playing Outside Builds Social Skills
"Ring Around the Rosie" and "Jack and Jill" are simple children"s rhymes that are common on every American playground
. What would become of such phrases, however, if funding for parks and playgrounds were reduced, or worse---cut all together? That is just what has happened in recent years. By reducing the money allotted to playground equipment, city and state officials are taking away children"s opportunities to socialize and become better aquatinted with others their own age.
Without a doubt, outside activity is one of the most crucial elements of the childhood years. Studies have shown that children's interactions on the playground give them the opportunity to become better socialized adults. Also, when taught that physical activity is beneficial from a young age, children are much more likely to become healthy and productive in the future. Thus, playground equipment not only helps socially, but it can also help in other ways as well. If given time both inside the classroom and outside on playground equipment, it has been proven that children can become academically advanced and progress faster in the use of motor skills as well.
Like adults who need a break after a long day at work, children need time to let out the energy they harbor all day in the classroom. To some, purchasing playground equipment may only consist of getting a slide and some new swings, but for young children, playgrounds may be their biggest source of interaction with others their own age. These hours of interaction expose children to numerous games that teach them what it is to win and lose and how to be a good sport. By providing children with playground equipment, we are also providing them with the tools to be well-rounded adults someday.
If funds are cut from sources that provide money to schools and public parks, children who utilize this playground equipment will likely end up playing in a less safe environment. Streets and busy areas may be the only places some children will have to play if playgrounds are not available. Wouldn't it be more beneficial to provide children with a safe and kid-friendly environment for playing? Few can argue that a public play area will not be beneficial to young children of any age. It is imperative that individuals support opportunities to fund playgrounds and playground equipment for children.
