. Sony is able to continue its market dominance with the latest version of its successful console line with the PlayStation 3. Sony designed the PlayStation 3 to be more than just a video games console. With it users are not only able to play games; they can also use the device to listen to music, watch movies and videos, view photos, connect with friends online and a whole lot more. With all these features the PlayStation 3 is able to support all kinds of digital entertainment and is not just a simple gaming console but a home-entertainment system.
The PlayStation 3 has evolved in significant ways since it was released back in 2006. To date, even the most avid gamers can get quite confused on how many PS 3 models have already been released over the years. What most of us know is that the console has lose some weight, increased power efficiency and tightened up its security system. So here, we aim to lessen the confusion by laying down the key differences of each PlayStation 3 model.
First generation. The first generation PlayStation 3s were the 20 GB (CECHBxx) & 60 GB (CECHAxx) units. These two were released in Japan on November 2006. Both had 4 USB 2.0 ports, a hardware-based PS2 emulation, a SACD playback, Linux support and Sixaxis controller. However, only the 60 GB version flash memory card readers and an 802.11b/g Wi-Fi. The 20 GB versions encasement was all black while the 60 GB version was black with chrome trims.
Second generation. The second generation PS 3 consoles which were released in early 2007 were available in 60 GB (CECHCxx) and 80 GB (CECHExx) versions. Both had 802.11b/g Wi-Fi, flash memory card readers and 4 USB 2.0 ports. The devices were partially in software-based PS2 emulation and were still on SACD playback, Linux support and had Sixaxis controllers. These versions were available only in black with chrome trims casing.
Third generation. The third generation console models were released on separate dates. The 40GB (CECHGxx, CECHHxx, CECHJxx) version was released somewhere in October 2007 while the 80 GB (CECHKxx, CECHLxx, CECHMxx) and the 160 GB (CECHPxx, CECHQxx) were released in August and October of 2008 respectively. All these models were available in three colors: Piano Black, Ceramic White and Satin Silver except for the 160 GB model which was available in Piano Black and Cloud Black. These consoles were equipped with the same 802.11b/g Wi-Fi but had only 2 USB 2.0 ports. Furthermore, the 3rd generation 80 and 160 GB models were already on DualShock 3 controllers while the 40 GB still had the Sixaxis controller.
Fourth generation. From 2009 to September 2010, there has been several PlayStation model releases these are the fourth generation consoles. This generation of PS 3s is distinct from previous models as they were slimmer; hence, they were branded as the PlayStation 3 slim. The features include the same 802.11b/g Wi-Fi, 2 USB 2.0 ports and DualShock 3 controller. Other than the slimmer form, new additions included the BRAVIA Sync XMB control (CEC) and the Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio bit streaming.
