Sony made the announcement in 2009 that they were developing a new motion control system

. Many were speculative about Sony's motives and capability to compete with the Wii. When they revealed the full system at the Game Developer's Conference this year, many of the secrets about this new innovation were revealed and some gamers are considering this system the next big thing in motion control video gaming technology. By fixing the things that Nintendo did wrong and adding some exciting developments of their own, Playstation Move might prove to be one of the coolest new ways to experience any type of video game and leave the nun chuck in its dust.

What Will Playstation Move Fix?

The first major change in Playstation Move when compared to the Wii is the tracking bulb on top of the controller. One of the first drawbacks for the Wii is that it could not use your distance away from the television as an effective controlling consideration. Not only will this allow for forward motions such as stabbing or using a bow and arrow, it will also allow programmers to use the bulb for visual cues. For example, health can be determined based on the color of this bulb. As health depletes, the bulb can turn from green to red. It can also change color in fantasy games to denote whether you are using magic or not (turning blue).

The Playstation Move also uses Bluetooth technology to connect the two controllers to each other and the console without using wires. Both controllers have technology that can measure the speed at which you move the controllers and the angle at which you are holding them. Of course, they also have rumble technology. Both of the controllers also feature heavy plastic covers that allow for a decent weight when held in your hand and rechargeable battery packs - eliminating the need for a small fortune in AA battery costs.

Is Playstation Move The Next Big Thing?

Well, for families that want to play video games together, the Playstation Move will accomplish the same tasks as the Wii while using some new features for hardcore gamers. However, the same attitude towards the Wii will likely be applied to the Playstation Move. Many gamers will always prefer the feel of a standard controller in their hands and are reluctant to stand in their living rooms waving their arms around. The new innovations for fantasy games or RPGs might be little more than extra frosting on the cake. Imagine holding your arms in front of you for extended sessions of Final Fantasy. While the pressure sensitive triggers will be exciting innovations for shooters, fantasy gamers will likely still opt for a standard, never has to leave the lap, controller.
