When James was six, his father passed away. His mother took his brother, sister, and him on the street of China as homeless begging for food everyday in order to survive. They were homeless for three years.

One morning, he got up and felt something was different. He looked into the ragged bedding and found that his little brother was gone! His mother told him that she sold away his brother to others. James cried and knelt in front of his mother, begging her to take his brother back. His mother was full of tears on her face. James was shaking and pulling her arms while begging she remained silent as she kept on crying. With the money they had from selling his little brother, they were now able to live in a small village and James was able to go to school.

During James' middle school years, one night he woke up and heard some sounds coming from a grass house. He walked over quietly to take a peek. He saw his mother and another man on a bed. He learned many things throughout his tough life so he understood what was going on. He was angry that he bit his own mouth until it was bleeding. His mother saw and asked him what happened he replied angrily, "None of your business!" From all the money his mother made from being a prostitute allowed James to go to high school.

While James was in high school, one day after he finished his finals exam, he came home and heard that his sister is being engaged to a neighbor in their village. This neighbor has very bad reputation. He was not happy so he borrowed a grass house in the village and lived by himself for a week.

Throughout his four years in University, he was a top student. But he never called his mother "mom" once. His mother knew that James was angry with her for what she did always putting up an attitude with her. James looked down on his mother. Even after James grew up and had a family of his own in the city he never visited his mother once.

One time James' mother came to the city to find him. She brought a bag of cotton to give to James' family to use as quilts. James knew that the countryside does not produce cotton. She had to work very hard to collect them from far away. He felt sympathy for her and asked her to stay at their home for the night. His mother refused saying his house is already small enough to keep his own family comfortable, she would only cause inconvenience. She looked at James in the eyes. Suddenly, James felt guilty and sorry for her.

A few years passed and James became successful in the city. He found his lost younger brother and sister from the country side. He gave them each a place to live in the city. Both his brother and sister do not like their mother one bit. They felt they had a life filled with suffering and unfairness. Finally, one day their mother fell ill. They visited her in a hospital not feeling anything for her. She spoke to them just before she passed on saying, "I know you all hate me. But I knew what I was doing. All I wanted was to let your big brother go out and succeed. Let him become your one hope to obtain a happy life. This is the only option we had. Therefore, no matter how tough my live was I will not complain." She smiled with tears in her eyes, "My only regret in life is that I am not able to hold my grandchild and take a picture together. Then show this picture to all those people who looked down at us and bullied us that we are able to live a good life now - and that me, a poor country woman did not fall until the end."

James, his brother, and his sister cried, "Mom, please don't fall." In the end, they gained a deep understanding that integrity and courage are the greatest gifts she left to them.
