As pipes were initially made from lead, that's where they get their name from. The word comes from Latin word plumbum' which refers to lead. Basically, what is plumbing? It is the profession in which one provides services which relate to functioning with pipes, tubing, and plumbing fixtures for drainage of waste or drinking water systems.

Humans have certainly survived centuries without plumbing facilities, but at contemporary times you can't imagine life without a drainage system, water treatment system and proper water management. It now basically forms an essential element in the economic, residential and industrial structures.

Coming over to the plumbing fixtures, let's discuss the bathtubs and the showers first. Usually they are combined and sometimes can be independent but their main purpose is washing and showering. Showers are fitted with spray heads so that they can splatter a broad spray of water. The bathtubs, on the other hand, usually have valves attached to their sides for the purpose of filling the tub. You might have seen bathtubs fitted with Jacuzzi jets to give the luxurious feel. The normal bathtub is around four feet in length but could be up to six feet too, while the shower area is up to three feet square on average.

Next we have the toilets. Well, let's hope we all know that what they are used for but explaining it in a neat, clean manner wouldn't hurt either. The objective of the toilets is to dispose of the human gross and maintain hygiene. The disposed waste is carried to the water treatment plant. Usually, toilets are situated in undisclosed bathrooms as it is considered ethical to have and give some privacy when you are required to perform bodily functions. Toilets in the olden times weren't as efficient as they are now. Efficiency has risen up to a level where even the water used per flush has reduced considerably. What happens when you flush is that the water runs down the bowl with full force carrying with it all the contents of the bowl, to the storage tank, which is constantly being refilled.

Moreover, plumbing fixtures are not complete without sinks. They are perhaps the most widely used, most common and the most useful plumbing fixtures. They are being referred to as the most widely used as they are not restricted to any one area of your home. You could have a sink in your bathroom, in your kitchen and perhaps even in the laundry. Obviously, their use differs with the area. You need it for washing dishes in the kitchen and even for other kitchen requirements. In the bathroom, you need to wash hands,, brush your teeth, shaving and numerous other tasks. The large sinks for the laundry are designed for washing clothes.

The floor drains are yet another plumbing fixture. Their basic purpose is to drain the water in case of floods and can be very useful in avoiding massive destructive floods.

Without these basic plumbing elements, a home cannot be complete and a good plumbing structure can last for a long time without showing up with too many problems.
