Plumbing: Diy Or Hire A Professional?

If you own a home or business then at some point in your life you will be dealing with plumbing issues

. It might not be something major, perhaps just a faucet that's worn out. You see chronologically speaking people do tend to live longer than the expected trouble-free service life of the average plumbing system.

If you're like most people out there you might get hit with a shock when you find out what a licensed plumbing contractor charges per hour in your area and in that case you might even consider doing the work yourself.

So then what are the pros and cons of going with a licensed professional or doing your own plumbing work?

1st Pro for DIY

The first up-side for doing the work yourself is savings. If you have the time off, tasks like replacing the faucet on a kitchen or bathroom sink are now easier than ever. This is because manufacturers are now offering complete kits that come with everything you need, and that includes washers and even a little roll of plumbing tape to seal up your connections with.

So What's the Downside?

Of course it's not all a picnic in the park though, no matter what they pack into the box for you in the end you do have to do the work correctly. Everything has to fit perfectly and small leaks can be maddening. Then don't forget that you do need all the tools on hand that are required for the job. So in the end while there will be savings it's generally not near as much is as you would anticipate.

2nd Pro for DIY

At the same time though, everybody has to start out learning from the beginning and knowledge is power. What you learn by replacing the faucet you can use to move up from there to do more complicated plumbing tasks. You can also pick up the tools as you need them along the way. Don't forget that there are plenty of great DIY plumbing sites online that you can refer to if you run into trouble.

So what are the Downsides?

Now before you get too excited starting on your home or business to do your own plumbing repairs there are two things you want to keep in mind. One is that the work has to be professional quality or you can end up having to do it over and over again. Then if something does go wrong, the bill for water damage can get real high real quick, and a professional plumber has insurance to cover that.

3rd Pro for DIY

Then the third reason for doing your own plumbing work is that as home improvement projects go plumbing really isn't that complicated. Once you learn the basic principles and terminology it's just a matter of hooking up pipes and making sure that everything doesn't leak. Also don't forget that there are pressure testing devices that you can use to check for leaks before you turn the system back on.

The problem here is that you're still going to need to bring in a licensed professional for doing gas line repairs. Thinking that you're qualified to work on gas lines because you've done some previous work on water lines is setting yourself up for a major disaster. A leak in a gas line can be catastrophic. Then even though plumbing is straightforward for the most part, not all of it is and learning lessons the hard way can be tough and expensive.
