Plumbing Repairs: Do Not Put These In A Garbage Disposal
The garbage disposal unit was invented almost a hundred years ago and since then it has grown into popular use
. This device helps clear the drains with food scraps that we may or may not intentionally put into the sink. And because of it, there are less plumbing repairs to fix especially those in relation to the kitchen sink and the drainage system.
But even though the disposal unit is such an amazing product, we still should not just throw any food scraps into our drains. There are still some items that the disposal unit cannot successfully grind into smaller pieces and might even cause damage to it. Because just like any other mechanical products, there are still certain limitations to it. Because if you get to clog the drain, you will have to call some Melbourne plumbers to clear it.
Here are some of the food items that we should never allow to get into our garbage disposal unit because it can either break down the unit or cause serious drain clogs.
1. Bones
Animal bones are natural hard items and can never be easily broken down by any garbage disposal device. It does not matter if the bones are in small pieces to begin with, it will still cause damage to the unit. For instance, it can get lodged between the blades, causing it unit to break down. If you throw bones to your disposal unit habitually, chances are it will not last long.
2. Egg shells
Some people think that egg shells are effective in sharpening the blades of a garbage disposal unit. This is not true. In fact, egg shells are known to cause blockage in the drainage system so keeping these away from your drain is a priority.
3. Rice
This goes with both cooked and uncooked rice. Cooked rice further expands when it is submerged or exposed to water and that is exactly what happens when rice goes through the skin. Uncooked rice may not fair better. Aside from it being a very hard item for the garbage disposal unit to break down, it also expands when put in water. Therefore it is still best to simply avoid putting any rice into the sink.
The same thing goes with pasta. Bits of it can get trapped in the unit and cause it to work harder with each use.
4. Greasy items
You already probably know by now that grease is a drain's major enemy. Grease can solidify while it is within the drain pipes and thus cause drain blockage. And because it also goes through the garbage disposal unit, chances are it can also contribute to the deteriorating factor of the unit. If these happen, you will have to work hard clearing clogged drains or just straight and call a plumber for help.
5. Very stringy vegetables
There are many vegetables that can be considered stringy but two of the most famous ones are celery and lettuce, which happen to be some of the more popular vegetables. With this said, it is safe to surmise that these vegetables can be among the top causes of blocked drains all over the country. Something to think about because while vegetables can be good for us, it may not be the same for our drains.
Plumbing repairs can be avoided if we can just get rid of our old habits, just like whenever we throw any food bits into the sink. Even if we have a garbage disposal unit, it cannot work on every type of food and in the long run, after being abused, it will eventually break down.
