Kitchen Water Conservation

If you use a dishwasher, only operate it when it is full and don't overload it. Dishwashers are designed to clean at full capacity, so running it with less is a waste of water. Also, the unit will not clean the dishes sufficiently if overloaded. Therefore, you will often have to run the cycle again which wastes considerable water.

Replace leaky gaskets as soon as the faucet starts to drip when closed with normal torque.

Allow foods to thaw over time without running water over them. You might also use a microwave, but this will increase your electric bill. Try not to use a garbage disposal, as this needs water to eliminate waste. Throw food into the trash instead.

Bathroom Water Conservation

Install a low-flow shower head and take short showers instead of baths. Baths require a great deal more water and taking excessively long showers wastes a lot also.

Don't do laundry as often, and only run the washer when you have a full load. Try to wear clothing more than once as items are often worn a short time and then hampered (this is especially true of children and teenagers).

Outdoors Water Conservation

When watering the lawn and plants, do it in the morning or evening. This reduces evaporation. You can also collect rain water in containers to use for this. Try to avoid over use of sprinklers and use a nozzle on the water hose to conserve water.
