Rooting a Plumeria Cuttingl
Like anything else with gardening, rooting a Plumeria cutting is all about the preparation. With the right tools and instructions, you will have a beautiful plumeria tree growing throughout every season. Please note that all the items I mention in this article can be found at Lowe's or Home Depot.
What you will need:
A. One 4" to 6" plastic or grow pot with drainage holes in the bottom of the pot. This size pot will house your Plumeria for about one year from the time you root your Plumeria.
2. Any purchased potting soil or soil-less media that can be used for Houseplants.
3. Gravel for Potting, any type of cinder or Perlite..
4. Dip-N-Grow or some type of rooting compound.
First begin by making a mixture of half soil and half cinder. This allows for easy rooting and great drainage. Apply some water to your mixture, just to the point where it is damp. Then, put a couple half inch rocks in the pot and begin pouring in your soil/cinder mix till you're 3/4ths full. Make a hole in the center of the soil mix that is at least 2" deep and big enough around to fit your cutting. Use a rooting compound and follow the instructions on the package on how to use this product. After it has been dipped in the rooting compound according to package instructions, place your cutting in the hole you have made in the soil mix and firmly pack the soil mix all around the cutting, adding more soil mix if necessary to get the cutting firmly packed. Double check to make sure the Plumeria cutting is nicely secure in it's new home. Take a pitcher or cup of water and begin watering the cutting; stop when water has emerged from the drain holes. If water does not drain from the holes and begins to well up over the edge, replant the cutting.. Plumeria's in general do not appreciate sitting in water and your growth will be hindered if this happens.
Getting a Plumeria cutting to root and grow differs slightly from growing a rooted plumeria. Counter-intuitively, you actually need to keep the cuttings soil fairly dry while it's roots are spreading. Of course, as mentioned above, the exception to this is when you pot the cutting and water it till the water drains through to the bottom of the pot. Now, allow the soil to dry out, waiting a week before continuing. Repeat this watering regime over the next 2-3 months, giving it a little bit of water (enough to moisten the soil) and letting it dry for a week. Your Plumeria cutting will now be rooted, YES! But, just to be sure, check the roots by gently slipping the plant out of the pot. Please be aware, while the cutting is going through the rooting process, any full leaves or fluoresces should be trimmed immediately. Once it has rooted you will need to increase the watering to about every 4 or 5 days, making sure the soil is dry before you water it each time.
Do you live where there is frost? Are you rooting your Plumeria during the Summer or Spring? If you answered yes to both questions, then put the cutting in an open area that gets direct morning light and during the afternoon, allow some indirect sun. This, of course, is only till it roots, then the Plumeria can be in the sun all day. Are you trying to root a cutting when there is frost outside (i.e. during the Winter and Fall months)? If so, then forget about growing this little guy outside, bring it in and place where it can get a lot of sun. The only caveat is that most times Winter and Fall are cloudy, if this happens, the use incandescent or florescent light bulbs for light. It will need 6 to 8 hours of bright indoor light each day. If you do not get a frost in your area of the country, then while your cutting is rooting, treat it as if your were rooting in the Spring or Summer for frost environments.
