Pocket Squares - From Practical To Fashionable
Pocket squares are those coy looking piece of cloths peeking out of the hidden pocket on the left breast of your blazer
. The usage dates back to as early as 15th century where Chinese farmers kept a piece of cloth in their pocket to cover the head in the case of intense heat on the fields. 14th century English King, Richard. He was known for carrying a piece of cloth with him to be used at the time he needed to blow his nose.
The pocket square originally serve as handkerchief or tissue as we know it these days, and they were kept in the breast pocket to keep them clean until needed. Once a pocket square was used, it is transferred into the pants pocket.
Then Kleenex introduced disposable paper tissue in the early 40s and soon the fabric handkerchief no longer served a useful and practical attire piece. Afterward not too many people used the handkerchiefs to clean the nose anymore but fashionable society agreed that the piece of clothing was definitely a keeper and soon people started having fun with it, wearing the pocket squares as accessories.
About as close as two or three years ago, however, pocket squares are exclusive accessories worn by the creme de la creme, those so high in the society you can only see them on TV or at the cinema when you watch mafia movies.
People believe it was the TV show Mad Men which helped make such decorative handkerchiefs trendy and no longer exclusive. These days, it is nothing remarkable to see pocket squares peeking out of a blazer's or a jacket's pocket.
Hankies are a great way to refresh your blazer or suit. You need to change shirts and neckties but blazers are only as old as their pocket squares. Go ahead and travel with a maximum of two blazers; as long as you have several styles packed, you have a lot of outfits to wear.
Just like the necktie, the pocket square come in different patterns and colors. They are generally square in shape, however; it is the folding that makes a difference in their appearance, shape-wise. Tip: The easiest thing to do is to match your necktie with your pocket square. You don't have to buy the exact same color or pattern, just buy a pocket square with a color that picks up the detail of your necktie. For example, if your tie has yellow details on it, get a hankie with the same shade of yellow.
There are several ways to fold pocket squares, the One Point, the Four Point, the Square and the Puff. Folding a handkerchief is not that hard to do, especially the One Point which is the easiest fold.
You only need to fold the fabric twice so that it ends up a square shape, a forth of its original size. Place the folded square with the exposed folds facing your north. Fold the left and right corner so that they overlap slightly in the middle. Fold the bottom corner to meet them and then slide in the square into your blazer breast pocket, exposed folds facing out.
