HFB: Dr. Harvey Franklin "Bunny" Brown

BR: If that"s how it is getting to is that, you know, well, a high tide floats all ship. A low tide is where problems develop.

HFB: That"s right.

BR: We"re obviously in a low tide or winter in the season of medicine, the season of podiatry. If you are prepared for the season, you have a wonderful time and the families get together, the people go skiing, but if you"re not prepared for it, you"ll freeze to death.

HFB: That"s right.

BR: So what have you seen in the last 3, 4, or 5 years happening in Arkansas that was different than maybe 20 years earlier?

HFB: Well, we have a lot more younger people coming in here. I happened to be on the state board and I"m actually the one responsible for the paperwork and so forth from the podiatrist. They are interested in becoming a license in the state. You know, I checked through the paperwork and so forth and we"re having a lot more come in into the state. One of the hottest areas is at around Fayetteville which is where Walmart is, the Bentonville area. When I first got into practice, there was one podiatrist up there and he couldn"t beg somebody to come up there. No one would go to the area. Now, it"s the hottest area in the state.

BR: Well, maybe how economics change things. I guess it was low"

HFB: No. Absolutely.

BR: _____ national politics. You went from the good old boy and rule state to the national spotlight over the years. What have you done that was different?

HFB: Between the two?

BR: Yes.

HFB: Actually, there wasn"t a lot of difference back on those days. It was the good old boy type of politics, really.

BR: So all the meetings were decided before they started?

HFB: Oh, no. No, no, no. Not that. It"s just that it wouldn"t "" what you knew necessarily it"s more who you knew.

BR: You went through all the chairs, through president of our association 30 years after your relative. What was the highlight you think in your course through the APMA and accommodating with you, you as president? Was there a specific moment that you stand out?

HFB: They all stand out. You know, when I was elected to the board, you know, I couldn"t have been anymore thrilled and that was certainly a highlight moment. That was in San Antonio, Texas, in 1986, and then I worked my way through the chairs and was on what they used to refer to as the lower tier. Traveling around the country, meeting all the people, the respect that you have for being a member of the board, it was amazing to me. We would have disagreements with different organizations but as soon as we arrived in their state and so forth, they could not treat you any nicer. So, you know, all battles were off pretty much when someone from the APMA board would come to do their study.

BR: So, your time now, was there something you kind of didn"t accomplish that you kind of wish you did.

HFB: One of the things that I started and it took a different turn that what I wanted to do was a mentoring program for the students. And the type of mentoring that I wanted was not that "" what I wanted us to do is for someone to pick out a podiatry student and say, "Hey Bob, or hey Sally, is there a book you need? Let me buy this book for you. If you want to come in to town and look over my shoulder when I do your surgery, you"re welcome to do that anytime." I really would still like to see that done. I"m not sure that the students today or even interested in following anyone around like that. I think there will come a time again, you know, when this residency program is dry up that they might want to do that but right now I think they, the students, I think that they know more than what we do, and they probably do.
