Podiatry Practice Management: Meet The Masters, Lisa Schoene - Part 3

BR: So, when you do the 40-hour course or somebody who is a proficient foot doctor

, do they need a 40-hour course?

LS: Yeah. Yeah. That was my whole point to the

BR: Yeah? They still need thatI cant learn it in a 3- or 4-hour workshop.

LS: Yeah. That was one of my points to the Kinesiotherapy Association. I said, Hey, why dont you go into the group of podiatrists that wanna to take this course and just have a lower extremity course, because basically, when you take the course, you go head to toe. So I said, Why dont we put together a course? Im here. Ill help you out. Id love to be part of that and theres just unfortunately, it just hasnt kinda happened that Ive tried to come and get in to kinda discuss that with them and I dont know really. Its never really gone anywhere and even though I keep

BR: Could you foresee.if you were gonna design a curriculum, how long do you think it would take to be comfortable at using this stuff to get improvement in athletes for ankle sprains and where else with the fasciitis compartment syndromes?

LS: I think at least it was a good day, a day-and-a-half course that really, because I mean, I took a 40-hour course, and theres a lot of theory behind it. And I think in order to understand it you should understand a little bit of the theories.

BR: I dont know. I would say 40 hours to learn on taping, I kind of probably wouldnt attend it.

LS: And certainly.

BR: A one-day course, I probably would be interested in.

LS: Sure, sure, and as a podiatrist, it may not be something that you and I need 40 hours worth because we do tape and we use our hands and we use scissors and such and such. But its a course that PTs take and athletic trainers take. You know, other types of specialists like that will take that course, but they might be not doing a lot of that taping. So, Im just saying like the theory part of the course, I think, it is very interesting and helpful and then maybe just kinda having a day on lower extremity or something would be something to consider. So, I certainly would really love to get back going. I think its a great modality. Its one more modality that you can use.

BR: How is that reimbursed? Is that something the patients pay for independently? And how is that charged?

LS: You can use the strapping code. You can charge

BR: I think its going to be a lot of worth for $25 but

LS: Well, you know

BR: If you look at the way of strapping.

LS: Yeah, I mean it just depends on kinda like what or how youre gonna use that in your practice, but you can certainly use the different strapping codes.

BR: How much is a roll of tape? If I remember its quite expensive.

LS: Yeah, it is. I usually charge $20 to patients for a roll because its probably pretty close to one that when I buy it wholesale, so its not the most inexpensive tape, unfortunately, now.

BR: Thatd make $20 roll of tape plus your time; you gotta make it positive at the end.

LS: Yeah.

BR: Okay, so lets go into some athletes and somesomehow you kinda gethow would somebody get involved in all that? I mean, youve been involved with the professional ballet, the dancers, the runners, the college level, somebody listening whos been an athlete or that was their road into podiatry. And how is it an interest in getting involved even in local high school, or local community college, how do you suggest they kinda get the doors open for them? I was gonna say foot the door, but I figured that wouldnt be too funny.

LS: It is yeah. You know, I think that its justyou just have to be make some phone calls, introduce yourself in sports medicine, like Ive lectured in the past to different seminars and such. With sportsmen as inpatients, theyre different, completely different breed. And you have to really wanna be able to take some time with the athletes. If youre kinda10-minute person with every single patient, youre just notits just its gonna be difficult to build the sports medicine practice because, like today, I had a patient. I was in the room for over an hour with him. And he was an established patientone that I saw years ago, but he was going over a lot of things with him with his history, and we examined him and did a whole bunch of things. So you really have to want to work with athletes.
