Podiatry Practice Management: Meet The Masters, Lisa Schoene
Hi, everyone
Hi, everyone. Its Bret Ribotsky, welcome to meet the Masters. A tremendous pleasure with an incredible individual whose tremendously gifted in multiple areas. Id like to thank Dr. Comfort and Numina Transcription for making this all possible, and let me get to Lisa Schoene. Lisa is triply board-certified. She has been practicing for almost 20 years in the Chicago area. Shes involved with multiple Olympic athletes down to not-so-Olympic athletes, semi-professional runners, dancers, skaters, football players, gymnast, soccer, basketball, volleyball, and I can go on and on. She is involved in race coverage. Shes a tremendous marketing guru, so well learn a lot about that from her. Shes involved with the Joffrey Ballet, and if you ever make it to Chicago, Id encourage everyone to see that. She was originally born in New York, schooled in Chicago, residency in Chicago, so without further ado, Lisa, welcome to meet the Masters.
Lisa Schoene:
Well, I really realized from a really, really early time in podiatry that it was never gonna be about the money. And I knew from a really early time because originally, when I was in residency, I knew I wanted to get back into sports medicine because I was an athletic trainer in college.
And I realized really on an early, early, early stage in my podiatry career that success was gonna really be about having a fantastic well-rounded practice where patients are gonna continue to come back to see me year after year, hopefully not with the same problem, you know, and send their families and just have a really wonderful, well-rounded good customer service-oriented-based practice.
Bret Ribotsky:So summing it up, it would be contribution?
Lisa Schoene:Yeah, I think just giving back to my contribution to podiatry; I think it is mentoring and lecturing to the students. I love to kinda divulge my knowledge on things. I tend to love to teach, so I never say no to somebody if they call me and ask me for some suggestions or something or somebody asks me to come and lecture. I do that readily and I really love to do that, and thats really what to me defines success. And if you do what you love, the money will come, and I think that people who feel that way know what Im talking about, so, yeah, so thats kinda how its all kinda come down
Bret Ribotsky:So, howd you wind up in podiatry?
Lisa Schoene:Well, I was always pre-med even from my young age. I remember I was gonna go medical, medical all the time, went out to study, worked for my undergrad in New York. And I was working in the emergency room as an EMT, and I was working on the shift in the evening, and I was kinda befriended of by a guy named Ken, and I dont really remember his last name. And he had one time told me, Hey! You know, why dont you look into this new class that theyre having at school? Its called basic athletic training. So lo and behold, I checked this basic athletic training class, thinking it was like a boot camp, but it was actually the beginning of an athletic training program, and walked into the training room, loved it, and I just fell in love, and I just knew that I wanted to do that.
Bret Ribotsky:Wonderful! So, this athletic training program, maybe you can explain to people in 60 to 90 seconds. What is an athletic trainer and how do they differ from say a physical therapist, or from other ancillary sports providers?
Lisa Schoene:Well, athletic trainer or ATC is somebody who you see go out and run out on a football field if somebody gets hurt. Theres an athletic training room, you work closely with coaches, you work with therapists, you work with the orthopedic surgeons and doctors, and you give immediate, acute, and somewhat chronic care to athletes in an athletic training room setting under the kinda jurisdiction of maybe a sports program in a university and such and such. And so its grown quite a bit since Ive been in athletic trainer, and they very much working hand-in-hand with many, many PTs and a lot of the physical therapy centers.
