A PoE clock is a type of IP Clock. An IP clock is considered one of the most advanced synchronized timekeeping technologies out in the market today. In an IP clock system, each clock receives its time input from an NTP (Network Time Protocol) server through the existing network infrastructure of a facility. Unlike other systems, this eliminates the need for a master clock, which saves in extra costs. IP clocks offer a significant level of control that other systems do not provide. Through web monitoring software, the entire clock system can be viewed from one computer. This software allows the visitor to view the status of the clocks and see if there is a loss in synchronization or any mechanical issues, without having to visit every individual clock in a facility. This saves significant time and energy for a facility manager.
How does a PoE clock fit into all of this? The term PoE stands for Power over Ethernet, which refers to the method through which PoE clocks are powered. A PoE clock receives both power and data through a single Cat5 cable. In a typical, non-PoE IP clock system, wiring must be installed in order to provide power to the clocks. With a PoE system, this excess wiring is eliminated. In addition, this makes installation significantly easier. This PoE capability works through one of two ways: either the facility has a PoE switch already located in the facility, or the facility opts to use PoE injectors.
With a PoE switch already in the facility, usually located in a control room, the clocks are plugged into the wall with a single Ethernet cord. They then are powered and receive time input from the network infrastructure simultaneously over that single cable. However, if this is not a possibility, a PoE injector can be used. A PoE injector, which looks like a small box, connects to both an electrical outlet to receive power, and an Ethernet jack to receive data. These two inputs are then combined to provide a single output containing both power and data, which plugs-in to the back of the clock.
PoE clocks are no different than typical IP clocks in the numerous features they possess. Just like any IP clock, they can be controlled using web monitoring software. Features of this software include time zone settings and e-mail alerts in the event of a malfunction. In addition, PoE clocks have the ability to synchronize with other systems that are connected to the network infrastructure. Through this technology, any time-receptive electronic connected to the infrastructure will be synchronized to match the wall clocks. This way, you will never have a discrepancy between the time on your computer or printer and the time on your wall clock.
