Certainly one roadblock that faces every entrepreneur who is starting and running a dollar store is the minimal-earnings or tight margins associated with many dollar store merchandise items. This is not a roadblock to ignore. You must face up to it since so many of the highest volume products falling into the customer day-to-day necessities categories are included. The smart shop operator knows this is a balancing act between the requirement of carrying these items at all times and the minuscule profit margins they offer. Success involves continual attention to making it work for both your customer and your business.

To work for those running a dollar store, you must be able to generate a profit. To work for the customer it must be exactly the dollar store merchandise item they must have. If those items are not available, you will likely lose the customer because they will start shopping at stores where the needed items are available. You must have the core products shoppers need. For example; paper goods, household cleaners, shampoos, toothpaste and hand soaps are items you must have in stock at all times.

So you must continually monitor inventory levels of these products. Maintain inventory levels only large enough to meet demand until the next replenishment order arrives. If you order once per year, you are looking at a mountain of product. On the other hand ordering once per month significantly reduces the required inventory.

Your challenge is to maintain the balance between on-hand inventory and sales. Keep your shoppers happy. Minimize your inventory of low-profit products. Then watch the crowds build inside your store. They will purchase the core products they need, and much more during their visit.
