Points To Consider Before Going On A South African Safari
With South Africa having made the international news worldwide as host to the 2010
FIFA World Cup tournament, many people will be considering returning for a vacation, or visiting for the first time. The wildlife is a huge attraction there and they have many wildlife parks. There are some things that you should think about before going.
Budgets
The exchange rate is usually in the international visitors favor, there are some more things you can do to make it more affordable. Usually there are game lodges that will offer nice places to stay. These places are more for people who aren't worried about how much money they spend.
Most of the national parks offer self-catering cottages and/or camping facilities, with restaurants and small general stores available for visitors looking for a more affordable wildlife experience.
Another option is to stay in hotels, guest houses or bed and breakfast establishments close to the many national parks, using their proximity to take day trips into the park while still able to experience other attractions in the area. This will give you more freedom, even if you have to hire a car. This place has many well put together camping sites.
The Season
South Africa, being in the southern hemisphere, has its seasons reversed. The best game viewing time is in winter - June to September - where temperatures may reach 70 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit depending on which part of the country you are visiting.
Winter is usually the dry season so it brings the animals to water holes. Vegetation is not so dense, making game-spotting easier too.
Your Safety
The crime statistics in South Africa may deter some visitors, an alert tourist will have no problems. Being alert about what's happening around you is crucial. In smaller towns, you really only need to look out for petty theft. Cameras, mobile phones, wallets and purses are popular items that may be snatched if left unattended in restaurants or shops. Lock cars up and lock all valuables in trunks.
On safari in South Africa, please be aware that the animals you are looking at are wild, and dangerous. Follow any rules that you are told. Although an animal may appear unperturbed by a car stopping nearby, they can quickly change their minds if they feel threatened, with disastrous consequences.
Check and see if the area that you want to visit is prone to malaria. Use insect repellant at all times. Sunscreen is essential too.
A South African safari can offer you unprecedented, up-close views of animals you may never see outside of a zoo. The 'Big Five' - lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and Cape buffalo - are supplemented by a wide variety of antelope, giraffe, zebra, warthogs and many other species, including many unusual and magnificent birds. South Africa has many beautiful landscapes to offer.
