Points To Consider Before Relocating

When I was growing up in Phoenix, Arizona, I was constantly begging my parents to move us away

. Why? I loved my home, and I loved my friends--but I hated the agonizing heat that plagued the better part of every single year.

My parents wanted to move away, too, but they haven't managed to do so to date. Perhaps they just didn't realize the important things they needed to consider before making plans to make a new home, so they didn't feel comfortable going forward.

You might find yourself in the same position right now--you want to transplant yourself elsewhere, though you don't know how feasible it would be. Let me give you some points to consider and questions to answer so that you can get a better idea of how to approach this big decision.

To me, family is always number one, so let's discuss that first. Both parents and children should be kept in mind when you determine where and when to move.

If you have elderly, ailing parents, then you may prefer to stay close by to look after their needs for a little while. If you have a child about to graduate from high school, then you may not want to uproot them at this transitional period.

Those are two examples that you may consider during this process. Even if you do choose to move, you may want to remain within a reasonable traveling distance to family members.

As you might guess with my opening story, climate is a key factor in deciding where you ought to go. Now that my parents are finally approaching retirement, they would like to relocate to an area that has four seasons (which I assure you Phoenix does not) like Colorado, while many of my neighbors in Utah would love to enjoy balmy beach breezes like they would in Palm Beach Gardens, FL homes.

If you are moving for that particular reason--to escape to a more livable climate--make sure that you have a good idea of both pros and cons of that area. For example, while I love the snow, driving in it does take some adjustments, and it sometimes snows for days on end, without a peek from the sun, which is at times depressing.

You should have spent a substantial amount of time in the area before beginning a house-hunt. Talk to current residents and friends who vacation there or are from that region. This will give you a better idea.

Finally, consider your finances. It's a buyer's market right now, so that may influence your ability to relocate. Consult a skilled real estate agent to get a better idea of your chances of selling and then buying another property the way you want.
