The UK commonly experiences the latter. The instability of the maritime polar air forms convections which lead to formations of clouds causing frequent precipitation. The imbalance between the temperatures on land during spring and summer and the newly hushing air gets corrected in autumn. Therefore the unsettled weather, although the eastern side of Britain is shielded by the mountains of Scotland and Wales. For instance, London weather trends will imply cooler days not extreme temperature lows, along with reduced sunshine and wet weather.

The western UK is far more exposed to the severity of weather brought by the polar air with the end of autumn seeing intense depressions and storms.
