Polarized sunglasses differ from a regular pair of sunglasses mainly because of how they filter out light

. With a traditional pair of sunglasses, that are not polarized, all light will be filtered out, making everything look dark. With a polarized pair, however, they are made to be able to distinguish between different types of light and only filter out one type and not the other. Typically, the type of light that people want to avoid by using sunglasses is light that is being reflected off of a horizontal surface. This would be light that is reflected off of anything from bodies of water to highways. This is the kind of light that polarized eyewear will keep out, while still letting vertical light through.

There are a lot of things that you hear people say about polarized sunglasses, but not all of them are true. While polarized lenses will filter out horizontal light and let vertical light through, despite what some people may claim, they will not allow you to see things crystal clear, as if looking through a pair of eyeglasses. There are different types of polarized eyewear, but usually you will find they will still have a grayish colored tint to it, which is still better than regular sunglasses that just make everything dark.

Another claim you might hear about polarized sunglasses is that they will allow you to see fish in the water while fishing. While this certainly sounds outrageous and untrue, in reality, it actually is true. When you wear polarized eyewear while out fishing, the polarized lenses will reduce the significantly reduce the glare coming off of the water, which is horizontal light. The light coming up from under the water is vertical light. So the effect you will get by wearing sunglasses with polarized lenses is that, although the water will look darker, it will also be more transparent. If the water is fairly clear, and not too murky, you should have no trouble seeing fish within the water.

Something else you hear people claim is that polarized sunglasses will help you out while driving. This is also true. Wearing polarized eyewear when you drive will usually help to get rid of the glare you see coming off the car in front of you. The light being reflected off of the glass will be more polarized than the light coming off of the metal of the car. That means that the polarized lenses will help more in eliminating the light coming from the back window than they will with light coming off the trunk.
