Pole dancing is more and more becoming not just a performing art involving sensually dancing with a pole. People are recognizing that it is actually a great form of exercise that combines dancing with gymnastics.
Today, poledancing is considered to be a recognized form of exercise. It can be part of an aerobic or an anaerobic exercise routine. As a form of exercise it increases the participant's core and general body strength. In pole dancing as exercise, the body itself can be used as a means of resistance. Furthermore, the body as a whole can be worked and toned.
Advanced techniques requires significant endurance, flexibility, and strength. In order to be proficient, an individual must have both upper body strength and core strength. While pole dancing in strip clubs was traditionally a more sensuous and less athletic endeavor, pole dancing as exercise often includes strenuous climbs, spins, and even total inversions.
As the benefits of poledancing as an exercise that increases both fitness and general strength have been recognized, poledancing has moved beyond the strip club. Today many fitness clubs and gymnasiums offer dancing classes to their members. Although pole dancing has been traditionally considered to be an activity primarily for women, more men are beginning to engage in pole dancing as a form of exercise. The 2007 National Pole Dancing competition in China was won by a man, Zhang Peng who was a dance instructor. Furthermore, increasing numbers of people are also beginning to include a pole in their home gymnastics or work out rooms.
Pole dancing as a form of exercise has also caught the attention of the media. As increasing numbers of celebrities have become interested as an athletic endeavor, they have spoken about it in the media. For instance, Sheila Kelley, an actress who starred in Lost and Hawaii Five-O, has begun promoting the benefits by creating and marketing her own exercise program, which has been turned into a successful business, providing DVDs and accessories such as poles for people to practice at home.
Some people are advocating for it to become recognized as a sport or athletic competition event. Furthermore, some amateur competitions have been held. However, standardized scoring has not yet been completely developed and may differ from region to region where amateur events are held.
