Police crackdown shows thousands of traffic offences

Many drivers may have been risking their licenses and becoming the victim of prosecutions

due to traffic offences in one county in England, it has been revealed.

Figures cited in the Dorset Echo show that over the first six months of a safety crackdown, more than 10,000 motoring offences were committed by road users in the area.

Statistics released by the Dorset Police show that its No Excuse campaign has highlighted a significant number of illegal actions by road users.

Among the most common errors were speeding, failing to wear seatbelts and using hand-held phones.

For example, one of those caught committing a traffic offence was a woman who was talking on her mobile while travelling through a town centre. During her route, she went through pedestrian crossings, two roundabouts and failed to see a police car that was flashing its lights to get her attention.

Responding to the findings, head of Dorset Police special operations Chief Inspector Bob Nichols remarked: "Some 10,000 detections in six months by the dedicated No Excuse team alone shows very clearly that there continues to be an unacceptable number of motorists who are prepared to risk their own lives and those of others by refusing to comply with laws designed to prevent tragedies."

Meanwhile, Robert Smith, road safety manager at Dorset County Council, which is headquartered in Dorchester, said awareness among road users about safety issues is rising.

He added that many more drivers now know that they could be caught for committing motoring offences and they are paying more attention to their actions as a result.

Other problems that were detected by police included people driving with no insurance, no license and no MoT. Such incidents resulted in cars being seized.

Dorset Road Safe launched the No Excuse campaign in January and it involves Dorset Police, Dorset County Council, Dorset Fire and Rescue and Dorset Safety Camera Partnership.
