One of the critical steps in regards to a Narcotic or Explosive K9 selection is the process of selection of the suitable candidate.

The practice is time-consuming and may require testing several dogs before a dog passes our detection dog criteria. The dogs being tested must be social around people, possess a high retrieve drive, have the drive to possess the object that is used during the selection test of the dog, be able to adjust to environment changes, i.e., slick floors, steps, tight areas and the dog must use his sense of smell to search and locate the object in all of the areas used in the selection test. The primary reward should be what the dog is trying to achieve. During our selection assessment, we use first the metal pipe as our primary and then switch to PVC pipe to preserve the dog's teeth. Although the dogs test with metal pipe and PVC pipe when their training is started, they will be moved to a rubber ball (Kong), jut toy or a narcotic bag during the training phases so as not to damage the dogs teeth.
