Polyester Canvas - Cotton Vs. Polyester Canvas

, you have a few options to choose from in material, and one of those major selections is between polyester and cotton canvas. Cotton has been more widely used and accepted for a very long time, but technology has made polyester a great substitute that is much more satisfactory in the long run. One advantage that polyester canvas has over cotton is that it does not rot. It also does not crack in time like the cotton and other fabrics can. Choosing the right canvas material is not difficult to do, you just need to consider your needs before deciding which way to go since items painted or printed on canvas are generally expected to last a long time.

Now, when you are going to make a print on cotton or polyester, or paint a painting on canvas, the general process is that you will either put the image onto the canvas and stretch over the wood frame or, in the case of painting, you will stretch the canvas over the frame and then paint it. The problem with printing from a printer onto the canvas is that the ink from the printer is soaked up big time on a cotton canvas. The way this was initially fixed was to use a gesso coating over top the cotton canvas, and this was able to prevent the soaking in of the ink. Now that we have polyester canvas, we don't have to do this anymore.

Polyester canvas does present its own challenges as well. First, people are used to cotton. However, cotton does deteriorate over time, and it does take in a lot of ink. Some types of polyester, such as satin, do take awhile to dry. Polyester when it comes in the form of rolls is much cheaper than cotton, and its elasticity makes it great to stretch out, even by hand. It is highly unlikely to crack, and the stretching process goes much more smoothly.

Choosing your canvas type is an important decision when printing canvases or painting. When it comes to all these media types, cotton is still less durable than polyester. However, cotton is still the choice for many painting artists. Polyester canvas is the most suitable for printing canvases because of its ease of use and stretching. Weigh the options and choose what will work best for your particular type of project. Both are available and easy to get, so it is really up to your needs.
