Pool Table Care - Looking After Your Felt

Having a great looking table, keeping recovers to a minimum and also having a table

that plays smoothly is a key element to a snooker table or pool table owner.

Table owners can take several steps to look after the felt. This editorial has some key points for owners to having a nice cloth and ensure the longevity of games and the table.

Snooker and Pool Tables have their deterioration and naturally over time will get dirty with chalk, dust and other things. This no doubt will affect the quality of your frames and make your table look ugly. Always cover your table which will stop debris and dust getting on to it and even stop any accidental incidents to your felt. It will also stop the fading of your cloth.

Use a snooker table brush bought from a pool table accessories supplier to brush off any dust, dirt or debris. Always brush in the same direction from the D end (top end) of the table to the spot end (bottom end) of the table. Take care not to rip the cloth. You can also use a vacuum cleaner on a minimal suction setting. Once again be careful not to rip the felt. Regular cleaning will maintain your table for longer.

If you have a stain or want to clean the felt stay well clear of standard household chemicals and sprays. They will cause extra unwanted damage to the felt. Buy specialist cloth cleaner from your snooker table shop to do this.

To clean the balls use washing up liquid and warm water and then dry with a soft cloth. To avoid scratches to the balls don't use and rough or abrasive materials.

Leather pocket protectors can be cleaned with leather cleaner. Follow the instructions given with the cleaner. The frame (wooden or metal) can be cleaned with a damp cloth. Follow guidelines given by the cleaning manufacturer or ask your local snooker table expert.

If you have a tear in the felt you can look online to find guides on how to repair it but I would always recommend getting an expert out to recover your pool table.

Your snooker table or pool table can be played longer if you keep yourself or friends from sitting on the edge of it, keeping food & drinks well away from the edges. Additionally try to smoke in a different room from the table as the felt will pick up and keep the smell. Keeping it away from direct sunlight will keep the cloth from becoming faded. Try to stop letting drunk guests near it - this is the main cause of felt rips :-).
