Poorly-controlled Diabetes Tied To Cognitive Decline

The team members at Draelos Metabolic Center are committed to staying up to date with the latest scientific research

. Some recent studies have caught our attention and reinforced our conviction that management of your diet or blood sugar control is critical to well-being.

In a European study, scientists found that eating too rapidly may increase your odds of getting diabetes.

The small study compared 234 people with type 2 diabetes and 468 people without the disease and found that those who gobble down their food were 2.5 times more likely to have diabetes than those who take their time while eating.

Study participants with diabetes also were more likely to have a higher body-mass index and to have much lower levels of schooling than those without diabetes, the scientists reported.

We all have busy lives, so its easy to eat on the run and gobble down our food. But slowing down can make a big difference in how much you eat. Thats because it takes about 20 minutes for your stomach to tell your brain you are full.

Eating at a slower pace will help you feel more satisfied with smaller portions and also to be more aware of what and what quantities you are eating throughout each day.

This is easier to do if you are sitting at a table to eat, and not eating in front of the TV or your P.C. Here is another tip to slow down -- try resting your fork between bites.

Here is another reason to better control your diabetes.

A nine-year study led by California researchers determined that patients with severe diabetes who did not control their blood sugar levels suffered more rapid cognitive declines. The study is the first to link the risk of cognitive decline to the severity of diabetes.

"Both the duration and the severity of diabetes are very important factors," said Dr. Kristine Yaffe, the primary study author. "It's another piece of the puzzle in terms of linking diabetes to accelerated cognitive aging."
