Popcorn: A Snack For Everyone
This snack has gained in popularity over the years
, and can be enjoyed in many creative ways. Gourmet oils come in a variety of flavors, adding richness to the already wonderful taste of our country's favorite salty treat.
For a more robust flavor hit, add one of many different types of flavored popcorn seasonings. These can be sprinkled on an individual serving or added to the whole batch. Alternatively, it can be served in several large bowls, with each one boasting a different tasty treat. Then guests can sample each, before filling their popcorn bags with their favorite ones. These bags are great for making this yummy finger food more portable.
Popping kernels over the stove has become a lost art. Although the microwave variety has become the norm, and counter top poppers are wonderful ways to have a light, fluffy popcorn, it is still a fun activity to pop it over the stove. All it takes is a large heavy stock pot, with a good fitting lid, some heavy duty oven mitts, a good oil, such as coconut or peanut, and a good quality kernel. When making a large amount, heat about 1/3 cup of oil on the stove over a medium heat. Add 3 to 4 kernels and put the lid on the pan. When it is hot enough to burst all of the kernels, add about 1 cup of kernels, and quickly put the lid back on. Here is the secret to good popcorn: keep it moving. With oven mitts, grip the handles on the pot and gently shake the pot back and forth. If it is a single-handled pot, hold the lid on with one hand and move the pan back and fort with the other. The heat from the oil will start popping the corn, and soon there will be a big pot of fluffy white popcorn. Add toppings, like butter, salt and flavored seasonings and enjoy.
It also makes a nice gift. Giving a basket of flavored popcorn seasoning, a bottle of gourmet oil, and some high quality kernels is a nice way to say "welcome" to a new family on the block. A college student will appreciate a thoughtful gift of microwave popcorn, delivered in a handy storage container for his dorm room. And who doesn't appreciate the varieties and flavors of the popped variety presented in a decorative tin?
No matter if it is family game night, or a more formal gathering of guests, this snack food is one that says "welcome." Guest enjoy the salty, crunchy goodness of popcorn.
